Did't take the deal

As we discussed it, the understanding was Nissan was initially selling them at a loss, though not sure how true or how much. As such the dealer could not forecast what a replacement sale in future would be. He then added it would probably 2 years before I could get one as he had 2 yrs of orders filled. So I passed and glad I did. The MSRP did and continued to go up significantly... Over 30k.

Learning from that I pursued getting my foot in the door early on an NSX. We'll see how that plays out. And if such offers to let it (NSX) go for profit arise , I doubt I'd let it go.

FastAndFurious This is all very interesting as I do not have a close relationship with my local dealer. It's the first time I've heard of a dealership offering the buyer a refund along with an extra $20k. Did you end up taking the deal?

If you get offered a similar deal for the NSX will you take it? On the one hand you'll get a nice bit of extra money but you have been waiting for a long while for the NSX.

Gadgetman It took a little work to get them to even consider a deposit back then... Even though we assumed only about a year before production. But the sales manager put in the efforts needed with the GM to make it happen. I had tried for under MSRP in the contract/commitment but had to settle on MSRP. So here I am over 2 years later and nada... But have the contract. Again, the improvements to date make the delay more than acceptable.

Funny story....
Less than a year after the NSX deposit I stopped by to say hello plus check in on stats and was surprised to see the Nissan SM I dealt with when pre-ordering my GT-R in early '08. He smiled as I walked over to see what he was doing there at an Acura vs Nissan dealership. Turned out he was the new GM. He went on to say he saw the file on me and said I was very lucky to get that deal as he would never had approved it if the GM back then. Guess I now know who convinced the GM and owner of the Nissan dealership to reduce my pre order on GT-R to $5K over MSRP... Though that was a drop from their initial $20K over...Prior to negotiating and reasoning. I was their 1'st GT-R order as well. About 2 months or so after that order the Nissan dealership owner called me and offered to return my deposit plus $20k in pocket to let my order go to dealers representing deep pocket buyers. That was how crazy it got once magazines were doing some preliminary reviews and getting deep pocket car guys wanting to be early owners. Wonder what might happen with the NSX ?

OK
Enough on that for now.

FastAndFurious Welcome to the forum Gadgetman! You must have been well known at your dealership if you were able to put down a deposit in '13.

|\|SX Glad to have someone on the forum that comes from a good history of Honda's especially with that generation of prelude which is one of my favorites although its clearly not the fastest.

Welcome to the forum!

Hello from another (older) newbie

Hi
Decided it was time to join this forum... and hopefully gain some early insight .
My 1'st NEW car was a Honda Prelude ('80). Then upgraded it to a 'new 83, then in '87 an Acura Legend Coupe (5 spd of course) which I held on to for many years as I added other cars vs upgrade, Current Acura is an '05 RL used as my daily driver.
Till now my current sports and sporty cars have been non Hondas. I have a '73 Citroen SM, two Caddies ('89 Allante' and '04 XLR,) and a Ford '05 T Bird SE... (# 595 of last 500 built) for cruising. For sport rides I have several Nissans. '87 Z31n/a, '90 Z32 n/a, '91 Z32 TT (reasonably enhanced), and '03 350Z.. and finally my pre/early retirement present to self an '09 R35/GT-R... my holy grail car/toy... for now.
Shortly after retiring in mid '13, I convinced my Acura dealer to take a deposit so I could be their 1'st NSX order, and build it the way I want once details are available. We assumed it would happen in '15, but I have no issues with the delays which have enabled a much better car... though also much more pricey. This will be my ultimate "Post" retirement present to self. At this point I'm getting anxious but kinda wish it gets more delays (and improvements) because I do not wish to order soon and only to take delivery (maybe) just before winter and pay premature property taxes on a high priced toy just sitting in a garage for several months before real usage. Plus I need to decide if selling something or rearranging Toy Box and Car Cave to enable an addition

OK
that's it for now.
Glad to be aboard!
