some car makers go to serious lengths to hide what's really going on or provide just enough to send the internet wild. I remember this being the case when Subaru/Toyota was developing the 86/BRZ.

Honda is making moves to compete in even more performance segments. The last S2000 roadster was was given the axe in 2009, but now Honda is considering bringing back the roadster to compete against the likes of the Audi TT, BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK. The trio of the NSX, S1000 and S2000 would offer performance vehicles to buyers at all different income levels.

The new S2000 will likely make use of the NSX's hybrid powertrain. A tubrocharged mid mounted engine will send power to the rear wheels. Potential engines are a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder, or even a detuned version of the 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder found in the Civic Type R. The front wheels will be powered by two electric motors in a setup that is similar to what we find in the Acura NSX. That would make for an AWD layout that could switch to zero emissions driving for short distances.

The rumor mill also suggests that the top configuration of the S2000 successor would produce over 300 hp. It also will likely use a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

The S2000 successor hasn't received the green light for production yet. It's fate depends on Honda's performance in key markets like the USA and China. If profits are high then Honda can invest in low volume models like the S2000, but if profits aren't high then other projects will likely take higher priority.

Still, the S2000 could hit markets as soon as 2017, or even next year.
