Could NSX Give Birth To Baby ZSX?

Rumors about a baby NSX has been flying around since 2012 and earlier this year, Honda/Acura filed a trademark for the 'MSX' nameplate. Well now they’ve filed another patent for a name that could potentially be used for a smaller NSX, the baby ZSX.

Honda has recently trademarked the ZSX name with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on July 26 and it could be a sign indicating that another sports coupe which takes after the NSX could be on its way. But, this is by no means a confirmation because automakers are known to trademark names as a way to cover their bases in case they want to use it in the future.

This doesn’t mean that we won’t be getting a baby NSX because Honda seems serious this time. The ZSX has already been trademarked once in the United States but their ownership of the name ended on December 10, 2012. Because they trademarked it again, it could be a sign of Honda’s intention to bring a ZSX vehicle to the market and an anonymous member of Honda's engineering team in Japan told Automoto that Honda has plans to launch a concept ZSX at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show.

If it is based off of the NSX, we could be seeing a rear-mounted petrol turbo hybrid ZSX concept with a detuned 4-cylinder 2.0-liter engine from the Civic Type R. Maybe it’ll have an output of around 300 hp for the petrol portion of the engine and two electric motors (one in the front, one rear) pushing out an additional 50 ponies.

We really won’t know until the Detroit show next January.

Now this is something that will get me pretty excited. Potential rival for the 718 perhaps ?

With a model like this being offered could it mean we won't see the Sxxxx name return? Almost seems like this would scoop up the people that would spend S2000 money. If they were to slot something under it, like that S2000 successor, its needs to be something much cheaper as the only way it will work price wise is with a big drop from the ZSX

If they do decide to come out with a roadster version of the NSX then it could replace the S2000. We really haven't seen much about it since 2009. Maybe the next big thing is the NSX variants for Honda.

Now if this is a mini-nsx there would really be no reason for an S2000. There wouldn't be room for it anywhere ?

Not form what I can see and the FR-S was a good example of the potential of that segment which isn't much, so Honda might not go that high. Although they might do well with something smaller, like an S1000.

Why does the ZSX have to be a smaller version of the NSX? Why not just the same thing but with a targa body like this?

I think at that point they would just call it an NSX Targa and not change the complete model name. Just wouldn't make sense for them to do that

That would make no sense at all, just look at what every car maker has done since cars have existed. Even beyond cars, the same holds true. You don't just deviate from a name just because of a different roof, it doesn't work like that.

See like an S2000 or S1000 that could compete with the MX-5 and 124 would be ideal I think. I'm sure they would be able to produce one within really competitive pricing that would out-perform them as well.
