Sometimes lawyers just go after everything to try to get something, but often times they don't care enough to actually chase people down or build a case.

Most times, a formal letter from them is enough but Jalopnik probably has a team of lawyers too backing them up.

I think ultimately the goal is to discourage leaks, not to actually punish severely or fire people. Scaring people is enough.

Well, now they've proven that they can't go after leaks on Jalopnik without solid proof.

Gawker and its properties actively ask the public for leaks and tips so they wouldn't be very good journalists if they just handed over info on readers and sources at the request of a lawyer.

I'm just saying that this "airing out the dirty laundry" will show leakers that they are protected so they can freely share what they want as long as they don't incriminate themselves.

Might be something somewhere that states hosting those leaks or being affiliated with it is grounds for something. Jalopnik is a major outlet for getting this stuff out so they might be more willing to look into those details.

If they catch someone leaking then obviously they have means to deal with him, or they just fire him.

But every time there is a leak they can't go around asking publications to tell them about the profile that did it so they can track them down. The people really haven't done anything illegal.

Tracking it down will be an issue but they can always go after the site hosting it and that will be much easier. Might even be something outline somewhere already that lets them do that.
